Thanks to everyone for your input on the unknown critter from my last entry. I searched all over the internet but couldn't find anything exactly like it was. I believe Kelly came closest to guessing. It resembles a Crane Fly but the body and coloring look a little different. It may have changed once it dried out but it had flown away when I checked for it again so I didn't see it anymore.
I saw a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird over the weekend. I went immediately and fixed up some juice for it. The last couple of days it has been feeding from it. Yesterday I got off two quick shots through the glass door. It is not as close as I would have liked but I didn't have my telescope lens on the camera.
Have a blessed day everyone. Helen

What a good picture you got of the hummer. I can never get close enough with my camera. They usually fly away. It will be a few more weeks, maybe a month before they make their way to northern Ohio. I'm amazed at the distance they travel.
ReplyDeleteOh Helen...what a beautiful picture...gee you are a great photographer....it is a bit early here for our hummers but I have everything ready at a moments notice....we need warmer weather before they will show up...I just know it...without our big tree in the backyard (lost during ice storm earlier) I will have to look for another place to put my feeder....oh well...keeps me busy and out of trouble LOLOL...hugs Ora
ReplyDeleteI admire any photographer who manages to snap a photo of a little hummingbird. I am not fast enough. But they make great photos when you can manage to catch them. Thanks, Helen. Gerry
ReplyDeleteI just hung one of the feeders today! I haven't seen any yet, but it's around this time that they return.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! I haven't put out my feeder yet. I find they are more attracted to my plants than my feeder anyway. They are the coolest birds!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how everyone just loves them?
Well what ever it was, it weren't pretty! LOL
ReplyDeleteHowever the shots of the humming bird are fantastic. I love the little things. Sonny, who is in the hospital, always took great pleasure in watching the hummingbirds.
Thanks for the beauty.
Jack

ReplyDeleteThese are awesome photos of this fast moving bird. I would love to be able to photograph such a subject myself.
ReplyDeleteNice photos through the glass. Your glass must be a lot cleaner than mine. LOL I am anxious for the hummers to get up here. My wife and I have talked about it and think it is still too early here in SW Ohio.

VERY NICE HELEN. HUMMINGBIRDS ARE BEAUTIFUL.
ReplyDeleteTHE YEARS I LIVED UP IN THE MOUNTAINS, HAD MANY HUMMINGBIRDS COMING AND ONE YEAR A BROWN ONE ARRIVED SO EARLY THE FEEDERS WERE NOT READY SO I HURRIED AND FIXED A FEEDER. THE NIGHTS WERE STILL DOWN TO FREEZING AND SOMEHOW THAT BIRD SURVIVED AND SEVERAL DAYS LATER HERE CAME HIS MATE.
I BELIEVE THE SAME ONES COME BACK EACH YEAR. I HAD SEVERAL FEEDERS PLACED HERE AND THERE BECAUSE THE TIMID ONES ARE CHASED AWAY.
IF THE SYRUP GOT LOW THE BIRDS FOLLOWED ME AROUND WITH THEIR SCREECHING TO ALERT ME TO FILL THE FEEDERS.
ANOTHER TRICK THEY WENT UP HIGH AND DIVED DOWN, TURNING AWAY JUST ABOVE MY HEAD.
THE ALTITUDE AT MY HOME WAS 8500 FEET.
MIGRATING BIRDS STOPPED TOO AND WERE A PLEASURE TO SEE.
I HAVE GIVEN AWAY ALL OF THE PHOTOS TAKEN BECAUSE OF MY NOT EXPECTING TO BE HERE THIS LONG.
HAVE THE 89TH BIRTHDAY COMING UP THIS 24TH WHICH IS NOT FAR OFF.
THANKS FOR THE NICE DAY OFFERING OF THE PHOTOS. sam
great shots of the hummingbird, helen. so clear and sharp! i haven't seen any around here yet, but surely we will soon. hope you and ken are well and your daughter better.
ReplyDeleteThe hummingbird photos are gorgeous Helen, you're such a good photographer. I hope you're all doing well now. Jeannette xxxx
ReplyDeleteSince guessing what that bug was, I have seen a slew of craneflies around here. The chickens are chasing them and eating them when they can catch them. Guess its time for their emergence. I got three hummers visiting regularly right now. I need to refill one of my feeders today. They are draining them fast! :)
