What in the land is this critter?

As I was throwing pine blossoms out of my flower barrel this morning I threw what I thought was a black twig out then looked at the ground and saw something move. Then I noticed it was wriggling so I took a closer look, then decided to get my camera. When I got back and just had focused on it, it slide out of the black casing. I have never seen anything like this and just wondered if any of you had any idea what it was?

  2. What a good picture of nature you got there. It is some kind of moth hatched from it's cocoon would be my guess but I really don't know.

  5. We have something similar here, but I don't know what it is called. Ours tend to eat a lot of leaves while they are in the "worm like" stage.

We had so many of them one spring, we could barely go outside! It was literally raining "worm poop" from the trees. Yuk!

  6. I don't know what the bug is either. I love the pictures of your beautiful flowers. I love the colors. I have some deep rose and pink azalea bushes. I'm very glad you and Ken found Patches. I know how worried you must have been. Great news about Ken's eye sight. I can imagine how happy and blessed he feels. Have a great evening.

  12. Googled Crane Fly, and Crane Fly Larvae...and I think that is what it is. When I looked at the picture, it reminded me of a crane fly. Google it and tell me what you think? Wikipedia had some good pics I think it was.

  14. Neat thing that you happened to see it before you turned around and left the area. It must have been quite a shock.

  18. And you were right there when it crawled out of that thing? How cool is that?!!!???!!!

When I see some new insect in the yard I go to www.bugguide.net for identification. You can also post a picture on the site and they'll ID your mystery bug for you!
